Transport Layer End-to-End Error Correcting

چکیده
In this paper we study the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating error correction schemes inside the TCP transport layer protocol. We show that under some circumstances, this scheme achieves better performance than that of retransmission schemes, and, in particular, the TCP-SACK scheme. We analyze the performance of both schemes and discuss the circumstances under which the error correction scheme is favorable.

AIRMAIL: a link-layer protocol for wireless networks
This paper describes the design and performance of a link-layer protocol for indoor and outdoor wireless networks. The protocol is asymmetric to reduce the processing load at the mobile, reliability is established by a combination of automatic repeat request and forward error correction, and link-layer packets are transferred appropriately during handoffs. The protocol is named AIRMAIL (Asymmet...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Real-Time Transport with Link-layer Retransmissions in Wired/Wireless Networks
Real-time transport over wired/wireless networks is challenging, since wireless links exhibit distinct characteristics, such as limited bandwidth and high error rates, due to fading or interference. We focus on the efficiency of mechanisms that bind operationally wired and wireless links. In this context, local error control is attractive, due to the remarkable feasibility of wireless link prot...
متن کاملMultipath Transmission for Wireless Internet Access - From an End-to-End Transport Layer Perspective
With the growing demand of Internet services, network operators have put significant efforts to improve network error resilience and efficiency. Since there exist different wired/wireless technologies for Internet access such as digital subscriber line (DSL), Ethernet, and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMax), a mobile host can use multiple access networks simultaneously with...
متن کاملThe Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks
Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...
متن کاملMigrating State Information in Mobile Environments
Several studies point out the deficiencies of the transport protocol TCP in wireless scenarios. Falsely, TCP’s congestion avoidance mechanisms are triggered by packets that are destroyed due to the high bit error probability of wireless channels or loss due to disruptions caused by handoffs. This can be avoided, if the indirect transport protocol model approach is applied. It subdivides the end...
